Ramgarh District was carved out of the erstwhile Hazaribagh district on 12 September 2007. The district headquarters is located at Chhatarmandu in Ramgarh town. Geographically, the district headquarters lies at latitude 23°38′ North and longitude 85°34′ East. Ramgarh district is strategically situated on National Highway-33, approximately 46 km north of Ranchi, the state capital, and about 52 km south of Hazaribagh.The district is bounded by Hazaribagh district in the north, Ranchi district in the south and west, and Bokaro district along with Purulia district of West Bengal in the east.
The total geographical area of Ramgarh district is 1,341 square kilometres, of which 487.93 square kilometres is covered by forest area. The district comprises 315 revenue villages, including 305 Chiragi villages and 10 Be-Chiragi villages. Administratively, Ramgarh district consists of six blocks, namely Ramgarh, Patratu, Gola, Mandu, Chitarpur, and Dulmi. These administrative units are further divided into 125 Gram Panchayats and 320 revenue villages. For healthcare administration, the district is divided into four health blocks namely Ramgarh, Patratu, Gola, and Mandu.
