The Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil) is the administrative head of the subdivision and performs functions similar to those of the Deputy Commissioner within his jurisdiction. He exercises powers of the Collector under various revenue laws and supervises the work of Circle Officers and subordinate staff. His responsibilities include supervision of land revenue assessment and collection, coordination among government departments, and implementation of development programmes within the subdivision. He also plays an important role in maintaining law and order through close coordination with the police administration.
Under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, Jharkhand Police Rules, and other relevant laws, the Sub-Divisional Officer exercises magisterial and executive powers to ensure peace and public order. He may review police records, take preventive measures against anti-social elements, and monitor communal harmony. The Sub-Divisional Officer maintains close contact with the public, local bodies, and market committees for effective administration and implementation of welfare schemes. During Vidhan Sabha elections, he is generally appointed as the Returning Officer.
